Beowulf - Based on the epic anonymous poem about the hero Beowulf who slays the demon Grendel and then must deal with the wrath of the beast’s mother, director Robert Zemeckis assembles an impressive cast for this motion-capture animated take on the age-old story. British actor Ray Winstone voices the title character, Angelina Jolie is the Grendel’s seductive mom, Crispin Glover is Grendel, and Anthony Hopkins plays King Hrothgar.
Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium - Dustin Hoffman stars as the mirthy Mr. Magorium, who runs a toy store where everything comes to life. But things at the fantastic shop begin to change for the worse when the insecure Molly Mahoney (Natalie Portman) inherits it.
Love in the Time of Cholera - Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic romance novel gets the cinematic treatment in a film starring Javier Bardem. Modest Colombian telegraph clerk and poet Florentino Ariza (Bardem) falls hopelessly in love with Fermina Daza (Giovanna Mezzogiorno). But Fermina’s well-to-do father won’t allow the union, and instead Fermina marries the successful Dr. Juvenal Urbino (Benjamin Bratt). Years later the couple returns to Colombia where the now wealthy Florentino still longs for the chance to be with her.
Margot at the Wedding (In selected theaters) - Sharp-witted short story writer Margot (Nicole Kidman) decides to descend unannounced on her estranged sister Pauline’s (Jennifer Jason Leigh) wedding with her son in tow. As she sets about creating problems for the couple-to-be, the two sisters realize that even though you can’t choose your family sometimes family is the only thing you can depend on. Directed by Noah Baumbach, who also did the intelligent and touching The Squid and the Whale.
Redacted (In selected theaters) - Brian De Palma’s searing take on the Iraq war, Redacted is a fictional story based on actual events, namely the 2006 rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl by U.S. troops. De Palma combines a number of different techniques including digital camera, surveillance footage and media reports to relate his plot.
Southland Tales (In selected theaters) – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars as an action star with amnesia caught up in a series of events that could precipitate the end of the world. Directed by Richard Kelly, who also helmed the cult hit Donnie Darko.
