Here's your chance to show the big guys in Hollywood North what you're made of. Canadian filmmaker Bruce McDonald is releasing all the footage from his new film The Tracey Fragments (via BitTorrent on the official site), so you can re-cut it, submit it, and possibly win a Final Cut Studio package, and your version of the film included on The Tracey Fragments DVD.
Along with all the footage from the film, you can download the Broken Social Scene score, and the official script (all under a Creative Commons license). The contest is only open to Canadians (excluding Quebec), and runs until January 2008.
I'm glad to see a Canadian filmmaker/studio embracing new technology like this. It's a sign of progress (especially in Canada), and I hope it spreads to other markets and films.
More details in the press release below.
TORONTO - Acclaimed Toronto director Bruce McDonald has launched Tracey: Re-Fragmented, a re-editing initiative surrounding the release of his latest award-winning feature film The Tracey Fragments. The film, which stars talented young Canadian actress Ellen Page, employs multi-frame editing to breathtaking effect, pushing the boundaries of cinematic language to get inside the heart and mind of 15-year-old Tracey.
Tracey: Re-Fragmented makes available at www.thetraceyfragments.com all the footage shot during the making of the film for users to download and re-edit their own version of the movie or related projects including music videos and trailers. The Creative Commons licensed initiative also makes available the film's score by indie collective Broken Social Scene.
Bruce McDonald and his editors will select the best re-edit project to win an Apple Final Cut Pro prize pack. The winning project will also appear in the bonus features on the DVD release of The Tracey Fragments. Instructions and contest details are available online.
Director Bruce McDonald explains the inspiration behind the project: "The Tracey Fragments is a film that fully embraces experimentation and teamwork. I wanted to find out if that experience exists on the Internet and give others the chance to experiment and play with some beautifully shot footage of a world class actress in a free form environment. I hope people make their own feature films, short films, rock videos, trailers, experimental films and personal manifestos out of The Tracey Fragments."
Tracey: Re-Fragmented uses BitTorrent.com to release the files for legal download and is licensed through Creative Commons. The initiative was developed with Smiley Guy Studios in Toronto.
The Tracey Fragments is distributed in Canada through Alliance Films and will be released in theatres in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal November 2, 2007. The film recently won Best Canadian Feature Film at the Atlantic Film Festival with Ellen Page picking up the Award for Best Actress at the fest. The film premiered at the 57th Berlinale and won the Manfred Salzgeber Prize for innovative filmmaking. It has also screened at festivals around the world including Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and will play at AFI Fest Los Angeles 2007 in November.
