I've been spending a little more time in front of the tube since having a baby two months ago, and it allowed me to finally catch up on the entire second season of The Hills that I had stashed on my PVR. I'm almost embarrassed to admit this, but I was PUMPED for last night's Season 3 premiere! The show has a remarkable ability to draw in the most unassuming crowd, from your average teenyboppers and pre-teens, to frat boys and middle-aged women.
Season 3 opens with Lauren talking to new roommate Audrina about the rumours of a sex tape that have surfaced on the internet featuring her and Jason. Lauren suspects Heidi and Spencer (or "Speidi", as some fans call them) are behind the malicious attack, and she discusses how glad she is to have Heidi out of her life.

Lauren is shocked over the sex tape rumours
"Speidi" throws a housewarming party that includes all of Spencer's friends. Although Heidi sends personal invites to Lauren, Audrina and Whitney, the only friend that shows up is Jen Bunny. The next night Lauren and Heidi come face to face at Les Deux. Heidi gives Lauren a letter she wrote that explains how upset she was that Lauren didn't show up at her party. Drama ensues, which eventually leads to a shouting match between the two outside of the club. In a scene reminiscent of the Paris sex tape/Nicole fight, Lauren screams at Heidi that she knows what she did.
I feel bad for Lauren, especially since the rumours have reached home to the blessed land of Laguna Beach, but I'm not sure why she suspects Heidi is behind it. From what I've seen, when it comes to Heidi, Lauren tends to jump the gun a little bit.
Heidi used to be a favourite of mine, but I'm a bit concerned about the spell Spencer seems to hold over her. At one point, Spencer actually tells her "You come in handy". She's like a brainwashed minion of his, and even when she does manage to stick up for herself, she does so feebly and with a partial smile so as not to upset her master.
It's interesting to see Whitney in a different role. After graduation, she was hired on full-time at Teen Vogue and is essentially Lauren's boss. She's also single after breaking up with a long-term boyfriend, so I'm looking forward to seeing her play a bigger part outside of the office.
Episode 2 of the hour-long season opener shows Speidi discussing paint colours for the new apartment. Spencer scoffs at Heidi's suggestion of a light yellow for the living room, and instead surprises her with a graffiti-sprayed wall of "art" that reads 'Hollywood' (lest they forget where they live, perhaps?), complete with dripping flames and money symbols. Heidi almost tells him off, but Spencer cuts her off with his announcement of a trip to Santa Barbara that he tells her will be filled with surprises.

Hollywood art!
Meanwhile Audrina is busy getting back together with her ex Justin Bobby, who apparently ditched her in Vegas sometime before I watched the show. Of course Lauren has issues with him and tries to make her opinion heard, before common sense and a couple looks from Audrina stops her. It doesn't stop her from trash-talking him to Lo when Audrina leaves on a date with him. Lauren also wonders aloud why Audrina is gone so long since she told her she'd only be an hour or two and it's been at least four. When Audrina finally returns with the boy-toy in tow, Lauren and Lo mock his name, which noticeably pisses him off. Audrina announces that they are going to a club, and Lauren tries to divert her evil eye. Audrina notices and unconvincingly asks Lauren if she wants to come, and Lauren quickly rejects her. The final scenes show her going home to Laguna Beach to have a pow-wow with her mom about her friends and how badly she's been burned.
At this point I'm beginning to wonder what the deal with Lauren is. While I understand the whole "friends first" mantra she is always spouting, she does come off as slightly possessive and maybe a little bit envious of her friends' relationships. As my husband pointed out, perhaps she needs to find a boyfriend of her own and lay off with the judgments on her friends' lives.
In Santa Barbara, Spencer proposes to Heidi and presents her with a large amethyst ring he purchased in what looked to be an accessories shop. But hey, she's not picky (she is dating him after all!) and even though she doesn't actually say 'yes', she takes the ring and gives a long, sappy speech about how much he means to her.

Speidi on the beach
In what promises to be a season filled with drama, cattiness and revenge, Season 3 has officially begun! And I'll be soaking it up, no PVR required!

Lauren is not possessive she is a good friend.
its just her dumbarse mates are too effing stupid to realise they date tools and get burned. im guessing they do it for drama and attention.

I agree that Lauren is being a little possessive over her friend's lives, but I think she's only doing it all out of love. She just has to learn to keep her comments to herself. I think it's ok to tell them how she feels, but also still be a friend and not openly discuss them with Lo. Cuz what she is actually doing is pushing Audrina and her friends away. Nobody can help who they love. I don't understand why Heidi feels the need to push the whole sex tape issue. Even if there was one, why tell the whole world about it? I'm pretty sure there's a whole lot of couples in this world that makes them. Even if it did surface, it would only make her more famous. Look at Paris and Kim Kardashion. Heidi is making a huge mistake by being with Spencer but I think she feels that since she don't have a lot of friends she feels that Spencer is filling that void and feels like he is the only one on her side. But I guarantee that if the show was over, they would split up in a heartbeat.
